What type of gift can I leave?

Detailed below are the main types of gifts or legacies that people generally like to leave to charities. Your solicitor can help you with more specific, or complex gifts.

Residuary gift – this is a percentage of the remainder of your estate once the needs of your family have been met and the executors have made all the outgoing payments and other legacies or bequests.

Pecuniary gift  – this is a specified sum of money. In order to leave a pecuniary bequest you must state the exact figure in your Will.

Specific gift – this is a specific gift can be a gift of any object, for example a painting or antique; shares or property. You should ensure that this item is adequately described in your will to avoid any confusion.

Using a solicitor to write or update your Will gives you peace of mind. It needn’t be expensive and you can shop around for quotes and ask for recommendations from friends and family. The Law Society can also help you find a local solicitor visit www.lawsociety.org.uk If you have already made a Will, you can alter it by completing a codicil. A codicil is a document which changes or additions are made to an existing Will and must be read in conjunction with it.
